Home Packing Checklist Before Shifting
By Riya Trans Solution team · Published · Updated
Start preparing about two weeks before your shifting date: sort and declutter first, then book the mover and gather supplies, pack non-essentials in the final week, and keep valuables, documents and medicines with you on moving day.
A smooth move is mostly the result of a few days of calm preparation. Whether you are shifting within Neemrana or to another city, the same simple checklist keeps things organised, protects your belongings and makes moving day far less stressful. Use the sections below as a timeline and tick items off as you go.
What should you do 2 weeks before?
Two weeks out is the right time to make decisions, not to start packing everything.
- Confirm your mover and date. Get a written quote and fix the date. If you are still comparing options, read our guide on how to choose packers and movers.
- Declutter room by room. Decide what to keep, sell, donate or throw away. Every item you do not move is one less item to pack, load and unpack.
- Check the new home. Measure doorways, staircases and rooms so you know large furniture will fit. Note whether there is a lift and where the truck can park.
- Inform the society or landlord. Many housing societies and industrial-area colonies have rules on moving timings and vehicle entry. Ask at both ends.
- Plan utilities. Arrange disconnection and reconnection of electricity, water, gas, internet and DTH so you are not without them after the move.
- Update your address. Start the process with your bank, employer, insurer and important services.
- Decide on vehicle transport and storage. If your car or bike is also moving, or your new home will not be ready in time, tell the mover now. See car and bike transport and storage and warehousing.
What to do 1 week before?
This is the week to start packing the things you will not need before the move.
- Gather supplies. Cartons in a few sizes, packing tape, markers, bubble wrap, old newspaper or cloth for padding, and zip-lock bags for screws and small parts. If you have booked a packing service, confirm what the team will bring.
- Pack rarely used items first. Books, off-season clothes, decorative pieces, extra bedding and spare kitchenware.
- Label every carton. Write the room name and a short list of contents on at least two sides. Mark fragile boxes clearly and note which way is up.
- Use up perishable food. Plan meals so the fridge and pantry are nearly empty by moving day.
- Service and clean appliances. Defrost and dry the fridge a day before. Drain the washing machine. Ask the mover whether any appliance needs special preparation.
- Photograph electronics. Take photos of how cables are connected behind the TV, set-top box and computer. It makes reconnection much easier.
- Prepare an essentials bag. Clothes for two or three days, toiletries, phone chargers, basic tools, a torch, snacks, water and any daily medicines.
If you would rather hand over the whole job, our packing and unpacking service covers it from wrapping to setting up at the new home.
What to pack yourself?
Even when you hire a full packing service, some things are better packed by you:
- Personal documents, such as identity proofs, property papers, certificates, cheque books and passports. Keep them in one folder that travels with you.
- Jewellery and valuables, which should stay with you at all times.
- Daily medicines and prescriptions, packed in your essentials bag.
- Laptops and hard drives, with a backup of important data taken before the move.
- Items with sentimental value, such as family photographs, letters or keepsakes that cannot be replaced.
- Keys, including the new house keys and spare keys for vehicles and cupboards.
What should you never put in the truck?
Some items are unsafe to transport with household goods, or too valuable to leave out of your sight. Keep these out of the truck:
- Cash, in any amount you would not want to lose.
- Jewellery, gold, silver and other precious items.
- Important documents, including property papers, identity proofs, educational certificates and financial records.
- Medicines, especially anything you or a family member needs daily.
- Filled gas cylinders. Cylinders should be empty and handled as per your gas agency’s instructions before they are moved.
- Flammable and hazardous items, such as petrol, kerosene, paint thinner, firecrackers, aerosol cans, matchboxes and cleaning chemicals.
Also avoid packing perishable food, live plants that may not survive a long journey, and anything that could leak onto other goods.
Moving-day checklist
On the day itself, a short checklist keeps you focused:
- Be present when the team arrives. Walk them through the house and point out fragile or high-value items.
- Keep valuables and documents with you. Your essentials bag, documents folder and jewellery should never go on the truck.
- Check the inventory list. Make sure every carton and large item is listed before loading begins, and keep your copy safe.
- Take photos of costly items. A quick photo of furniture and electronics before packing helps if there is ever a question about condition.
- Do a final walk-through. Check every room, cupboard, loft, balcony and terrace before the truck leaves.
- Read the meters. Note electricity and water meter readings and hand over keys as agreed.
- Share contact details. Save the driver’s and supervisor’s numbers, and share the destination address and a contact person there.
- At the new home, check before signing. Count cartons against the inventory, look for visible damage and note any issue on the delivery receipt before you sign.
- Unpack essentials first. Set up the kitchen basics, beds and bathroom supplies before anything else.
